Awareness session at Princess Durru Shehvar Hospital



The Confederation of Voluntary Association (COVA) organized a public awareness session at Princess Durru Shehvar hospital,Purani Haveli on December 23rd, 2009,2 – 4 p.m, in collaboration with ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan. Informative brochures on "What is Dementia" in English/Telugu/Urdu, warning signs of Alzheimers bookmarks and printed material on "Normal Forgetfulness in Aging vs Memory Loss Characteristics of Dementia" were distributed to the audience.

The session, attended by 60 of the hospital medical and administrative staff, commenced with screening of the “Burden of Love” movie, on Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Suvarna Alladi, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, Nims Hospital, President, ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan, gave a power point presentation on Memory in Healthy Aging and Disease. She gave examples of Healthy memory and failing memory. She spoke about Dementia, symptoms, subtypes of Dementia and prevalence of Dementia. Differences between normal forgetfulness and dementia were also spoken about.

Rukhsana Ansari, Secretary ARDSI Hyderabad, gave a powerpoint presentation, introducing ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan and services offered. Some of the services offered by the local chapter include awareness sessions, educative and caregivers literature in English and Telugu, counselling, home visits, monthly caregiver meetings., training for caregivers and volunteers The vision of the local chapter is to propagate a person-centered care approach and have a daycare center and respite center along the lines of that done by other chapters.
