Understanding Dementia

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking, and daily life.

It happens when brain cells become damaged and are unable to communicate properly.

It can affect:

What happens in the brain?

In dementia:
  • Brain cells become damaged
  • Messages between cells slow down
  • Some cells die
This leads to:
  • Forgetfulness
  • Confusion
  • Personality shifts
  • Difficulty planning or speaking

Types of Dementia

Alzheimer's Disease (Most common)
Early signs
  • Memory loss
  • Repeating questions
  • Misplacing items
  • Getting lost
  • Word-finding problems
Vascular Dementia
Early signs
  • Slower thinking
  • Planning problems
  • Mood changes
  • Walking or balance difficulty
Lewy Body Dementia
Early signs

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)
